传奇式冒险小说《金银岛》（Treasure　Island；1883）使他一举成名，从此走上浪漫小说的写作道路。他的作品还有《绑架》（Kidnapped，1886）、《化身博士》（The　Strange　Case　of　Dr。　Jekyll　and　Mr。　Hyde，1886　）、《巴伦特雷的少爷》（The　Master　of　Ballantral，1889）　和未完成的《赫米斯顿的韦尔》（Weir　of　Hermiston，1896）。后者被认为是他的杰作。1888年因健康原因定居萨摩亚的瓦伊利马，直至去世。

富兰克林在自己的自传中记录了这样一件事：富兰克林在其少年时代经常在自家农场上劳动。有一天一位陌生男子来到他的面前，一边看富兰克林转动砂轮，一边不住地夸奖他。就在这时，这个男子将自己的斧子放到砂轮上，同时不住口地夸奖富兰克林。小富兰克林被他的赞扬搞得飘飘然，于是更加飞快地转动砂轮。斧子终于磨好了，那位男子却未加任何表示地离去了，小富兰克林的双手却被磨出了许多血泡。这时，他才明白自己上了那位男子的当。　

由这段故事而产生的　ax　to　grind　这个短语被人们用来表示这样的意义：something　to　gain　for　oneself　or　a　selfish　reason，中文大抵可以翻译为『为了达到个人目的』、『居心叵侧』、『用甜言蜜语欺骗人』等。例如：
